Where to eat in Port Avalon this autumn: the places we keep going back to

A harborside oyster bar, a noodle counter in an old bank and the best breakfast in the city, which is in a launderette.

This list is not the newest places in Port Avalon, or the most expensive. It is the ones the Weekender team actually go to, on our own money, again and again.

The Oyster Shed, Lowmarsh quay

Six stools, one counter and oysters from beds you can see from the window. Go at five, when the boats come in, and order whatever is on the chalkboard.

Counting House

Hand-pulled noodles in the vault of a 1910 bank. The safe door is still there. The beef shin noodles are $16 and big enough for two.

Spin Cycle

A café inside a working launderette on Dock Road, which serves the best breakfast sandwich in the city. You do not need to bring laundry, but people do.

Marisol

The special-occasion one. A tasting menu of whatever the 50-mile farms sent that week, in a room above the fish hall. Book a month ahead.

Tidewater Coffee

Not a restaurant, but it is where every one of us starts a Saturday. The cardamom buns sell out by nine.
