The shop that only sells things made within 50 miles

Coats, prints, paddles and pottery: Nearby, on Dock Road, borrowed the market’s rule and applied it to everything else.

When Calum Reid opened Nearby in 2021, he borrowed the rule from Harbor Street Market across the road: everything on sale has to be made within 50 miles of the shop.

It sells about 60 makers’ work, from wax jackets sewn in a Lowmarsh garage to canoe paddles carved from local ash. Each item has a card with a map showing where it was made.

“People come in for a present and leave knowing the name of a woman who makes mugs three streets from their house,” Reid said. “That is the whole idea.”
